Successful businesses on a small budget

We briefly introduce you to the Rehook success story who wanted to bring a bicycle chain reattachment tool to the market.

With a very low budget

(under 5000 euro)

Printare 3D Timisoara

With the help of 3D printing technologies they managed to develop the tool, market test and launch the new product in just 10 weeks with a budget of less than 5,000 euro, which would not have been possible with traditional production methods.

Within just 12 months of starting product design, several thousand pieces were sold.

3D printing the best solution for small-medium production.

Comparison table between 3D printing and injection molding.

  • Cost Comparison (Left Chart):

    • The traditional injection molding method costs €8200, which includes the cost of creating the mold.
    • 3D printing, on the other hand, costs only €520.                                                                                                                                       Production Time Comparison (Right Chart):
      • For traditional injection molding, the process takes 40 days for production, plus an additional 70 days to produce the mold.
      • In contrast, 3D printing takes just 10 days.

Initially, FFF/FDM technology was used to produce initial prototypes at a low cost.

Later SLS was selected as the manufacturing solution for initial production , this technology offers a wide range of strong and functional materials and is best suited for medium volume production.

The use of 3D printing allowed the design to be modified with no die change costs and in a very short time ( 1-2 days!)

Furthermore, SLS technology significantly reduces production costs compared to traditional manufacturing methods. By eliminating the need for expensive tooling and reducing excess material,

SLS provides a more efficient production process. This efficiency not only accelerates product development time, but also increases the ability to customize products without substantial cost increases, providing a competitive advantage in both time and expense.

How has VW Europe managed to cut costs on templates and fasteners?

        Case study.

Jigs and fixtures are work pieces used to help position and assemble parts. They are normally CNC machined to a high tolerance.

The level of fit usually results in long production times and high costs, as the shapes are often unique and difficult to machine.

        Volkswagen production line

This 3D printed wheel guard (first picture), previously obtained by traditional production for 800€ , now 3D printed in-house at 21€ per piece. Tool development time reduced from 56 to 10 days.

This glazing tool (pictured below) originally cost 180€ per piece to be made externally through traditional production. Now it is 3D printed at just 35€ Development time has gone from 8 to 6 days.

A model can be printed overnight and tested on the assembly line the next day. Operator feedback can be fed into the design process until the perfect tool is produced.

Volkswagen Autoeuropa has embraced these advantages. With an annual production of 100,000 cars, these 3D printed fasteners are in daily use on the assembly line.

This trunk badge device took 35 days in development when it was produced by traditional external manufacturing and cost 400€. With 3D printing, the project was completed in 4 days and the cost of the part was reduced by over 90%.
